5 Tips When Designing Custom Stickers

Are you creating new stickers for a product? Or maybe you’re starting a business and need promotional stickers to giveaway?

Whatever your need, we’re here to help you get the best results. And it all starts with a great design!

Let’s get stuck in – here are 5 tips to use when designing custom printed stickers.

Tip #1: Make sure your text is large enough to read

Smal, ineligible text can ruin a good design, and it happens way too often. We see designers cramming more & more words on their tiny stickers, making everything minuscule to fit. Less is more in this scenario.

When designing, you can zoom in to see incredible amounts of detail, but you cannot do this in real life.

Go for pt 7 text or above, and be sure to view your design at 100% scale, so you don’t encounter these problems.

Tip #2: Embrace white space

White space doesn’t have to be white. It is the metaphorical gaps between the content within your design.

We see too many designers, usually amateur designers, filling every pixel of their sticker with something. Don’t do it! Be strong. Embrace white space and use it to create beautiful, impactful designs.

Here’s a fantastic example of a die-cut sticker using white space effectively.

Tip #3: Measure twice, cut once

Getting the size right is critical. Our advice here is to measure twice, cut once.

An effective, low-cost way to get this right is to cut the sticker shape out of paper and placing it where you need it stuck. It’s well worth the few minutes of effort to avoid future problems.

If you’re giving stickers away or using them to promote your business, don’t go too small to save some money. 5-8cm stickers are perfect for general-purpose handouts. They work brilliantly on phones, laptops – exactly where you want them to end up.

Tip #4: Create vector artwork

Vector artwork is made up of maths equations, using tools such as Adobe Illustrator or CorelDRAW.

The beauty of vector artwork is when you want to change or scale your design, you won’t lose any quality.

If you have to design in bitmap, provide 1:1 scale artwork at a resolution of 300DPI to ensure it looks sharp once printed.

Tip #5: Use simple shapes

Simple shapes are the best for stickers as they are more durable. With complex cutlines, every minor detail is another edge that can be picked up and cause the sticker to lift.

Simple shapes are essential for clear stickers. A simple cut is more invisible, making for a better finish. Check out the image above for a perfect example.
