If you are a pretty active person at this point in your life but you do worry about getting older and losing your mobility then you may be worrying unnecessarily. It is important to stay active as we age because it helps to cut down on the amount of pain that we go through and it helps to keep our stress levels at a manageable point. We are working so hard right now so that we can retire when we are 65 or so and so it seems a real shame that we don’t properly prepare so that we can enjoy the twilight years of our lives. You should know that you start losing muscle mass the moment that you hit your 30s and it begins to diminish from that point onwards.
It doesn’t mean that you have to accept this and it is all about keeping yourself moving and keeping yourself physically active. The good news is that there are many people out there who are looking to take up occupational therapy jobs so that they can provide you with the assistance that you need. These are people who want to do something that they love but also to give something back to the wider community and they should be commended for that. As well as visiting them regularly, the following are just some other things that will help to keep you active as you age.
- Keep everything low intensity – It can be tempting to continue as you have for many years and hit the road on a regular basis. You should know however that running is a high-impact exercise and so it may lead to ongoing injuries as you begin to age. In some cases, your training routine can be put back by a couple of months or more because you are pushing yourself too hard. You need to start thinking about introducing low-intensity exercises into your daily routines so going for a swim or just taking a brisk walk will be sufficient to burn calories and to get your heart pumping.
- Be sure to stay regular – Even though you may be reducing the intensity of your exercise routines, you still try to get the recommended amount of exercise every single day. Many medical practitioners say that doing 30 minutes of exercise every single day is sufficient to keep you in good shape but if you can push that to 45 minutes then that will be much better. You need to stop making excuses that you can’t put aside this amount of time every single day because you are too busy. This is your health we’re talking about here and so make it a priority.
Going forward, you should try to take advantage of the assistance that is out there for you while also trying to make sure that you enjoy your retirement years. You worked hard to get there and so try to make the most of it when you can.
